Which areas of the CoTA (Circuit of the Americas) do you think will be best for overtaking and which areas do you think will be the most difficult?
“I feel like there are a handful of really good passing areas. Obviously, as usual, after the long straights and the front and back straight away are both very slow to get into some really tough braking areas which are at low speed, in first gear. These are certainly good areas. There is a little chute at the back, about halfway up the trail, which should be pretty good. Then I think coming out of the last corner on the front is a good thing right away. I think there will be a lot of opportunities there. Especially the fact that the pavement is older and the tire wear will be quite decent. It will also open up a lot of opportunities and should be fun.
Is there anything about CoTA that looks very different from what you’ve done before?
“I think in general the track has a bit of that just because it’s so unique with high speed and low speed. It’s like Sonoma and Watkins Glen have come together. It’s a little different in that regard. I think as far as road courses go, it is a road course. I don’t think there’s anything guys are going to be completely freaked out about or lost about.
How would you like to ever have the chance to train and get behind the wheel of an F1 car?
“Maybe. Depending on the track. I think it’s a whole different world than driving a production car. Be careful what you wish for, I guess. It would be great to feel what that is. was and maybe going through this in some kind of open deal like they used to with car swaps. I don’t know if I will try in a real race. I would be in a place that I probably didn’t belong to. No. It would be cool to experience these cars and how they felt and how different it really is.
Is it realistic to be able to bring Denny Hamlin down to 75 points for the regular season championship and more bonus points?
“It’s doable for sure. It’s obviously going to take a bit of bad luck on their part. We had a few bad races and that is really the difference. Wrecked in Daytona, wrecked in Talladega and a flat tire on the last green-white checkerboard in Bristol really hurt us. We had some really bad finishes and that’s really the difference and they’re going to have to have a few, I think, for us to catch up with them. We will see how it goes. Obviously, we feel good about where we are as a team and what we do. If we can keep winning races, we’ll do what we need to do in terms of points. “
Do you have points in mind or are you just going to win races?
“I think when you say points, we think of the championship bonus, of the playoff points. Winning races, winning stages, that’s what we have to do and that’s what we did last weekend. It would be great to win the regular season because that’s also a part of those points. We will see how it goes. We are well positioned and focused on what we are doing. The team is doing a great job. We must keep pushing and continue to accumulate these bonus points. “
How did it feel to have fans and people back in Darlington this past weekend?
“It was great to come back to where we should be and to have fans there. Our sport is doing well. We feed off of it as drivers. You feel this energy. I think we all talked last year when we came back and there was no one there, no training, it was just like we were on a test. It doesn’t look like a real race. It’s really more normal to have everyone there and enjoy a great show. Definitely a lot more fun to celebrate after winning when they’re around for sure. “
How confident is Joe Gibbs Racing knowing that you and Denny Hamlin are first and second in points?
“It’s good. I think everyone is happy with our situation. This sport is changing quickly and it’s very difficult. We just need to keep pushing and working hard in the direction we’re going. think what’s great is we have a game plan. After last year we weren’t happy with where we were and everyone went to work. I worked in many key areas and doing a lot of good things. Feeling good. I think all of our cars are performing well and that’s a good thing. We’ve all had a chance to win or win. It’s been good. Just keep going. to push and try to win more and I hope we will stay on top. “
What makes you so good at Dover?
“Since I went there for the first time, it’s a place that I really enjoyed. It’s a unique track where you can use a lot of past history and I think for me when I go there I don’t really care how fast we’re at or the exact setup or things like it. I really trust the car and know what I’m looking for. That’s really a key to a lot of places, it’s once you figure it out, if you can replicate that feeling or those little trends that your car has to do well, you can do it over the years and we were able to do it. the. Hope we feel it like I love this weekend and get up there and try to win another one.
What is your relationship with James Small like and do you feel fully acclimated after a year and a half together?
“It feels good. James (Small, team leader) and I are on the same page and I think at the same time a lot of it is about him doing a great job and taking the right decisions, which is a tall order without practice. There is so much that goes into building a car and preparing it for a race and then putting some setup in there. You lean on it. history of the past you rely on simulation and it’s so hard trying to figure it out. There are so many assumptions and so many things for you to guess at. I think it does a really good job . He understands very well what I need. Doing a great job of trusting his gut and not being afraid to get aggressive about certain things in certain areas. He does a great job and it was fun to have success. Last year he was a little stressed about winning only one neck. csr and trying to figure out how to handle this situation or agreement without practice. He does a good job and I hope we can continue.
How difficult was the race at Darlington for you?
“I think it was a very difficult race. I stepped in on the first long run of the race by radio and said, can’t believe how smooth it is and how slow it felt. It took a lot of discipline and our car ran well all day, obviously. But it was still difficult to drive. It was a handful. The traffic was a real big deal. In order for me to do speed, I had to be at the limit in three and four. Right on the fence and actually in the last 10 laps of the race I think I scratched the right back six times and if you hit it a little too hard it will pull the right front into the fence and you may have tire friction and the race might be over. It was very difficult. It was by no means easy. There is never one in Darlington. It was a handful.
Does this team feel like the favorite at the start of the championship?
“I don’t know. I don’t think we really look at it that way. It’s more of a media approach of picking favorites and naming people and all that and that. I don’t know if we do. we’re too wrapped up in it all. We focus on what we’re doing, where we’re at and where we think we have to be better all the time. I think we feel good, we feel good with three wins. In three or four weeks someone else could also have three or four wins. This sport is changing fast. A lot is going on and just focusing on trying to keep it going. Really focused right now. over Dover and trying to get out there and do the best job we can. I was talking about CoTA and the setups for there and what we’re looking at. Looking into the future how we can continue to run well, earn some races with a little luck and leave us Let’s talk about who the favorites are and what they think we can accomplish. We know what we’re capable of, we just have to make sure we keep it going.
How are you and your crew mentally preparing without training or qualifying at Dover?
“There is a lot of preparation around the layout of the track and the car with where is this year with the rules and trying again to use the past history, to use the things that we have done there. down before and then you make adjustments based on different things like the weather. If they change the tire which I don’t think they’ve done this time around and all of those factors and just trying to find the best package they can. I think for me as a driver, mentally, I just go back and forth and into my brain and into my memory bank and think about the things that we have done there in the past and the things that we can possibly owe. -be working to be better and try to visualize and do these things. There isn’t much you can do as a driver to prepare for these races. Rely on your experience and background of how you have felt before and try to give the team leader insight into what exactly you need and explain it the best way. Then show yourself and let it all go. I look forward to this, it should be fun and still love to go. “
