Small red Corvette crunched while accelerating SUV
No one was seriously injured in a three-car crash in northern Spokane early Thursday afternoon, but the incident shattered a 1958 red Corvette ready to go to an auto show later this month -this.
Witnesses said a high-speed Ford Escape had a stop sign at the corner of Maple Street and Rowan Avenue and was boned by a pickup truck. The Escape rolled onto its side and then skidded into the vintage sports car on the other side of the intersection.
Corvette owner Gary Keyes said he had just made a run to the store for Rain-X. In a few weeks he was supposed to bring the car to Pendleton, Oregon for the Hotrod-a-rama auto show.
He spent over $ 100,000 and put four years of hard work in the car.
“I really wish I just got home,” Keyes said. “I’m just crazy as hell.”
Spokane Police Officer Bill Workman confirmed at the scene that the Ford Escape was following the stop sign and that everyone involved suffered only minor injuries. The woman driving the Escape got a ticket.
Keyes said his passion for classic cars was hit by a series of bad luck.
Seven years ago, Keyes was driving a 1955 Austin-Healey near the scene of Thursday’s crash.
Just like today, Keyes pulled to a stop sign, but that time was hit from behind by an inattentive driver.
Keyes will have the Corvette evaluated to see if it can be fixed, but the auto show will not be held for him and his beloved car this year.
He has insurance on the Corvette.
