Philipp Eng: “We had potential for more”
Romeo Ferraris rider Philipp Eng finished another solid weekend in his second appearance in the PURE ETCR, finishing the Hungaroring round in second place. But the Austrian thinks a better result could have been in store for him.
An error during his qualifying lap prevented him from taking pole position in Super Final A.
“The car was very strong in the time trial,” said the Austrian. “Obviously it was a bit of a disadvantage to be out first because nobody knew what the track conditions would be and you can underestimate the grip, so I braked myself.”
Qualifying issues did not stop Eng from taking the lead at the start of Super Final A, with Cupra’s Mattias Ekström exercising caution and rider Romeo Ferraris securing the victory.
Eng finished the weekend in second place behind Mikel Azcona.
“I am very proud to be sitting here in P2 again after the weekend,” added the Austrian. “It was a good weekend, very good teamwork as well, I think like the guys from Cupra, all my teammates and I worked really hard for this, we had a very open discussion about the team, on the setup, and that’s how we get things done, so I’m very proud of the whole team.
“Obviously I would like to be the king of the weekend, but once my Super Final was over, it was in Mikel’s hands. But I’m still super happy with the P2 and the good points we got this weekend.
The PURE ETCR introduced the power-up function for the Hungaroring, as well as increasing the power output of the cars to its maximum of 500 kW, a decision Eng found correct.
“I think the weekend in Copenhagen was a little easier because we didn’t have the power, but without trying new things you don’t have progress, so from everything in our lives we learn and let’s move forward, ”said the Romeo Ferraris. driver. “In Formula EI I used the power-up like crazy to break the cable and get away, but in this championship you can’t.
“The race is a lot of fun, it’s a good touring car race with some overtaking and friction. It was a lot of fun with Mattias so I’m super happy, ”concluded Eng.
