Motorsports In Action bought an all-new McLaren 720S GT3 ahead of a targeted step into North American GT3 competition in 2022, according to team owner Eric Kerub.

The race-winning Operation IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, which is currently campaigning with a McLaren 570S GT4 for Spencer Pigot and Sheena Monk, completed a GT3 car shakedown at Circuit Mont-Tremblant earlier this week.

Kerub explained that the decision was made to purchase a 720S GT3 after studying Compass Racing’s performance with the car in WeatherTech Sprint Cup races last year, as well as its improved reliability and racing success. endurance during the winter.

The Canadian team has set their sights on a WeatherTech SportsCar Championship or the AWS-powered Fanatec GT World Challenge America program for next year.

“Last year we decided that if we were going to try a GT3 program with some drivers / customers / sponsors, we didn’t want to be in a situation where we would try to sell a car-free program,” Kerub told Sportscar365.

“If we wanted to be competitive remotely we had to get the car and run it, have the team take it apart to understand all the systems and get familiar with how everything works and is removed / installed so that we are competent on race weekends.

“The end game is to attract a program for 2022 in IMSA or SRO.

“Owning the car now allows us to offer private testing to potential customers and allows us to get real data on operating costs according to our internal protocols.

Kerub said there is no rush to put the car on the grid this year, with the team taking a longer-term approach.

MIA is currently planning further trips to Canada this year to collect more data and generate interest.

“Last weekend was just a shakedown with some basic alignment / setup to run all systems,” Kerub said.

“The car definitely exceeds our 650S GT3. We will be holding more track days and probably having some local club races to get more used to the platform.

“I hope we can generate some interest before next season.”

Having made the switch from McLaren to Acura GT3 machines for this year, Compass is reportedly selling its 720S GT3 to a collector.
