McLaren GT 2021: costs, facts and figures
McLaren has been around for a while. For most of the 20th century, they were best known for their racing technology and endless success on the F1 circuit. But, towards the end of the 20th century, they decided to give road cars a try. That being McLaren, of course, they wouldn’t just make a simple supercar. They set out to design the fastest car in the world. In 1993, this car became F1, way ahead of its time. To this day, it remains the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world.
A few years later they collaborated with Mercedes-Benz on their second road car, the SLR, but McLaren Automotive finally became a serious contender in 2010 with the introduction of the MP4-12C. Since then there have been a lot of McLaren models, but until recently there was no real grand tourer sports car within the perimeter. Something that would speed up and turn like any McLaren, but it would be comfortable to ride along the freeway or a coastal road, while still having room for all your luggage. That changed in 2019 with the introduction of McLaren’s first GT car, referred to simply as GT.
2021 GT preview
Even though McLaren presents this car as a GT car, it still uses a mid-engined setup and the same carbon fiber tub as all other McLaren models. It also looks pretty weird and looks like a supercar on the outside, but compared to stuff like the 720S, Saber or Senna, the GT is much more understated.
Dominating the front of the GT is a subtle front fascia with a slim set of headlights. The side profile is distinctive and clean, and so is the rear. The rear also features a slim set of taillights, and at least compared to other McLaren models, the tailpipes are in a surprisingly normal location; by the broadcaster. Classified as a GT car, the McLaren GT faces competition from the Aston Martin DB11 and the Bentley Continental GT.
2021 GT powertrain and transmission
As you might expect, there’s only one powertrain and powertrain available on the GT. Behind the cabin is McLaren’s now familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. Even though this is the same base unit that you will find in all other McLaren products except the Artura, there are a few changes in this app. The main difference is in the turbochargers, which are smaller but designed for more responsiveness at low revs, due to the GT’s touring car status.
Due to the smaller turbos, it’s not as powerful as the 720S’s, but it still puts out a practical 612 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. A 0-60mph time occurs in 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 203mph sending power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. There is also a slightly different suspension setup, although the front and rear double wishbones are still borrowed from the 720S. According to many journalists, the GT appears to be stuck in super GT limbo. It has some GT car qualities, but the supercar origins of the engine and chassis are definitely noticeable. However, that doesn’t mean the GT is a bad car in any way; it drives amazingly well, but it also spins great when you need it.
2021 GT Comfort And Quality
Climb inside the GT, and it should sound familiar if you’ve spent any time in other McLaren models. The steering wheel is almost identical, as are the infotainment system and the center control console. The gauge cluster is also similar, but it doesn’t fold up or stunt like the 720S and Senna. The center console houses the chassis control buttons and the gear selector, arranged like a staircase of switches, and the engine start button.
Even though the interior is familiar, McLaren has gone to great lengths to make the interior of the GT much more luxurious than its other models. There is better soundproofing and more comfortable seats, and in that regard the GT is much better in terms of interior comfort than its stable mates. The GT’s infotainment system is responsive and crisp, with all the features you’d expect. A variety of interior colors, trims and packages are available, along with exciting options like a Bowers & Wilkins sound system. The GT can accommodate two passengers and has a total of 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space; 14.8 at the rear and 5.3 at the rear, which is very impressive.
GT 2021 price and launch
The 2021 McLaren GT is available to order from October 2021. Pricing is the same as previous model years, with the most basic GT starting at $ 213,195 in the US. a variety of colors designed by MSO, various interior options and other goodies.
Even though it’s not a luxury sedan, the McLaren GT seems to strike a very interesting balance between a supercar and a GT car. A full-fledged GT car it certainly isn’t, but if you want a supercar that can double as a long-distance cruiser when you need it, look no further.
