Liverpool boss Klopp warns they don’t have time to sulk
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has warned his side that they don’t have time to shy away from their bad campaign if they have a chance to make the top four.
Last season’s Premier League champions suffered a shambolic title defense and could very easily miss European football all together.
The Reds are seven points behind fourth-place Chelsea – although they have at least one game in hand over the majority of the teams above them – but Klopp is not giving up hope of qualifying for the Champions League next season and says his team need to be fully focused for the rest of the campaign.
“We’re not kids in a candy store who don’t get the candy,” he told reporters (via Sky Sports). “We are responsible for the situation we find ourselves in and no one will watch the Champions League next season, lie in front of the TV and cry if we are not involved.
“If anyone was having a hard time with this, I hope I realize it and can fix this situation early.” I’m pretty sure I would recognize him sooner rather than later.
“We still have a chance for the Champions League and we have to be focused on that. Some people obviously think we don’t have a chance anymore, so we should already cancel the season.”
The Liverpool squad have been decimated by injuries this season and despite demanding full focus for the last five games of the 2020/21 campaign, Klopp has admitted he can’t wait to see his squad bounce back this season. next when a number of its key members return.
“Summer is important to all of us and you can say the exact same thing about every player,” he added. “When you don’t start a match, you have to use every training session and every minute on the pitch to convince. I don’t need to be convinced to be honest but it’s about showing up in these kinds of situations.
“Beef [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] has had a great time, is training really well at the moment, and his situation is not easy, not only for him but for all the boys in this situation. Thiago has become, in a really difficult season, a very important player for us.
“I don’t think we’ve seen him before, but we’re 100% confident we’ll get the most of him because he’s a world class player.
“For Naby [Keita], it’s not easy, for Shaq [Xherdan Shaqiri], it’s not easy and for some other players it’s not easy, I know that, but a lot has happened during the season and what we tried to get and keep was there balance and rhythm.
“Always with a different defense, some things in midfield had to be different from other times when we were a lot more stable and stable, and that’s why some players don’t have enough minutes.
“We hope that will change completely next year because when you have more stability in the last row, you can be more flexible in terms of training higher up the pitch.”
