The highly anticipated Red Bull Soap Box Derby took over Des Moines on Saturday afternoon. Some cars crossed the finish line. Others – crashed into hay bales lining Walnut Street near the State Capitol Building. The Iowans have taken over the international event, and you don’t have to look far to see where they got their inspiration from. “We’re all from Iowa! That’s where Iowa culture comes from! The butter and the state fair! The butter cow!” exclaimed Eric Doll, a member of the Cream Team whose derby car resembles the Butter Cow at the Iowa State Fair. His team has been working on their corncob car for months, and they’re excited to showcase it in the state capitol. “I live in West Des Moines, I love seeing things like this happen in Des Moines to see this great event and show that Des Moines can put on a good event like this too,” he said. . Most Iowa pilots are upbeat rookies, like Caleb Knutson. His team’s Ghostbusters-inspired ride raises money for the Iowa Food Bank. “The pandemic and inflation have really hurt people, so we want to make sure people aren’t food insecure, especially in rural Iowa,” Knutson said.
