What’s under the hood
Probably the most exciting news from the 2022 Land Cruiser revolves around the engine. A turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with 480 lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 3,600 rpm will produce 409 hp at 5,200 rpm.
It outperforms the naturally aspirated 5.7 liters of the previous generation thanks to the pushrod engines. The LC200’s V8 generates its maximum power of 381 hp and torque of 401 lb-ft, a little further into the rev range, at 5,600 and 3,600 rpm, accordingly. At the same time, the turbo engine has to be much more fuel efficient than the slow NA V8.
The other engine is a 3.3-liter V6 diesel producing 302 hp at 4000 rpm and 516 lb-ft of torque between 1600 and 2600 rpm. Power also increases compared to the previous diesel, with a 4.5-liter twin-turbo-diesel V8. The demise of the V8 is not surprising, given that rumors of a new turbo V6 running as a substitute have been circulating for over a year.
While a twin-turbo Land Cruiser V8 would be fantastic, we’re not holding our breath. The good thing is that these new V6 gasoline and diesel engines outperform the older larger engines in terms of performance, fuel economy and low-end efficiency.
Toyota was able to reduce the volume of the fuel tank by up to 15 liters by switching to a more fuel-efficient V6 engine, which resulted in better packaging. This movement also reduces weight, which is further reduced by the use of an aluminum platter.
Design and measurements
There is also information leaked about the size of the upcoming vehicle. The new generation will feature two different measurements for two different configurations. The GR Sport version has an overall length of 4965 millimeters and the ZX trim has a length of 4985 millimeters.
It is also 1,945mm tall, an increase of 35mm over the previous model. The sportier model has a slightly wider body at 1990mm (1980mm for the ZX), although both have a wheelbase of 2850mm.
The interior does not appear to undergo any significant changes as it is already well executed and top notch.
The reader and other options
As mentioned earlier, Toyota is expected to provide two variants for the upcoming model year. A family model with more on-road capability and a monster off-road cruiser.
The entry-level Land Cruiser GX-R and the top-of-the-line Land Cruiser ZX both come with a separate front suspension, while the rear has a four-link layout.
The all-terrain Land Cruiser GR-S, created by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance division, will use an improved edition of Toyota’s kinetic dynamic suspension technology, already used in the 200 series.
The system, dubbed “ E-KDSS ”, is intended to replace hydraulics with electronics to control the car’s stabilizer bars on the road while allowing them to be fully detached for optimal mobility in all- ground.
The GR-S and ZX grades will receive a variation of Toyota’s Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which uses computers to tighten or loosen the stabilizers depending on the pavement. Drivers can also customize their preferred setup by choosing from five separate driving settings.
A 360-degree camera with a “ multi-terrain 3D monitor with transparent view ” will be included in the GR-S and ZX model classes, allowing the driver to see obstacles and adjust the wheels appropriately while cruising off road. The rear camera receives a washing device to clean dust and mud so that the system can work off-road.
