Chevy Nova SS Drag Races Fox Body Mustang, is surprised by submission
The 1970 Adventure units we have here have kept most of the classic styles intact, right down to the vinyl top. However, as its drag pack wheels and tires and bonnet hood indicate, this is not a factory machine.
Instead, the Chevrolet is now powered by a low-end 5.3-liter LS (yes, that LSX badge on the front fenders raises a few questions), which runs on an 85mm Borg Warner turbocharger and sips E85.
The Fox Body, on the other hand, was not so lucky, as its introduction in 1978 placed it in the midst of the Malay Era, meaning performance was seriously affected by a mix of strict goals. emission reductions and outdated laws that prevent many innovations from being introduced. Fortunately, this era ended in 1983, with the pony becoming sharper and sharper throughout the following decade.
And while its style continues to polarize enthusiasts, the compact size, as well as affordable aura of the Blue Oval toy has made it a darling of the drag racing community.
The adventure example we have here does not contain any details, but we can tell you that it is a 5.0 hatchback model sporting the facelift introduced in 1983 which brought a more rounded front end and a more elegant grille.
However, the ‘Stang’s quarter-mile results speak for themselves, helping to outperform the Nova SS despite being able to run in the middle of the eight seconds.
The two plates of America came together earlier this month in the Summit Midwest Drags competition, which requires contestants to travel hundreds of miles between three drag tracks in just four days. Oh, and here’s a fun fact for you: this remastered 1970 Nova SS will do about 10 mpg (25 L / 100 km) on the highway.
The video below, which comes from Drag racing and car stuff, allows us to see the massive difference between the reaction times of the two pilots (time stamp 1h30). However, the ET (elapsed time) numbers that decided the winner don’t take this into account, with the Nova having a nasty surprise.
However, you can also check out the rest of the clip to see the Chevrolet show off its taillights to plenty of opponents.
