Blue Suede Cruise arrives in Tupelo again this weekend | Local News
TUPELO • After a year on blocks due to the pandemic, Tupelo’s annual motor show, the Blue Suede Cruise, returns this weekend for what could be its biggest show ever.
A total of 654 classic cars have been pre-registered for the annual show, according to director Allen McDaniel. The public can view the cars from Friday to Sunday in the parking lot of the BancorpSouth Arena. The Saturday morning car parade through Tupelo is also back.
“We’re going to have a huge crowd this year,” McDaniel said. “I think we’ll have one of the greatest shows we’ve ever had.”
Like many events over the past year, the 2020 Blue Suede cruise has been canceled to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. McDaniel said the year away from normal activities has given classic car owners like him time to work on their cars.
“I imagine a lot of them went to their stores and tinkered with their cars,” he said. “You couldn’t go anywhere or do anything. They must have been home for a while. That’s what I did. I tinkered with my things for a while.”
As more people receive vaccinations and restrictions on events are relaxed, McDaniel said the show is ready to welcome attendees and the public once again.
“Once people have had their second chance, they’re not so afraid to go out and get involved in something anymore,” he said.
McDaniel, however, added that the Blue Suede Cruise will not have a poker race or walk this year.
“Other than that, it’s going to be like years gone by,” he said.
The car park is open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, then from 6 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. An Eagles tribute band will perform at 7:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday, the classic car parade through Tupelo will start at 9:30 am from the Malco Theater in the Barnes Crossing district. Cars will drive down Gloster Street, then east on Main Street to the arena west parking lot.
Car registration reopens at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday on the east side of BancorpSouth Arena. For more information, visit bluesc.com.
