Bastian’s Vic title victory – Speedcafe

A limited campaign for the 2020-21 season was simply not enough to prevent Alistair Bastian from securing victory in Saturday night’s Victorian VSA Sprintcar title which was contested at Redline Raceway in Ballarat.

In what is currently his third season with the Westpoint Racing team owned by Colin Sands, the 23-year-old rider on Saturday night managed to improve on his previous best attempts for the Victorian title by two minor podiums (third) with what was an impressive victory.

As the decisive race for the Victorian title approached as the fourth-highest scorer after a fourth and victory in his two qualifying races, Bastian felt confident of a leading performance throughout the 35 laps, and that’s exactly what he did.

From the start of the race, Bastian made his intentions clear in the opening laps by placing third despite his car setup being quite tight. He then chased Shane Steenholdt for second place and on lap 15 he managed to execute a successful pass on him for position. As the star race, which saw only one stop in the opening laps, continues, Bastian set his sights on leader Sam Wren as they made their way through the irregular traffic. With Bastian’s car setup getting better and better and also finding a comfortable line at the top of the track, he was able to get closer to Wren and then, on lap 20, overtake him for the lead. For the remaining 15 laps, Bastian controlled the pace and achieved a comfortable victory.

For Bastian, winning the Victorian title after just four attempts was very satisfying to say the least.

“Winning a Victorian title is a dream come true and doing it the way I did made it even more satisfying,” said Vic-backed driver Maxim # 55 Westpoint.

“I’ve always been pretty quick around Redline Raceway and felt pretty confident that I could do well before the Victorian title. I was quick from start of the night to the end which is most important, and I owe a lot of that to my team’s efforts throughout the night with the car setup.

“I can’t thank the entire Westpoint Racing team enough for all of their continued efforts, especially my team owner Colin Sands and teammate Adam Greenwood, and winning a Victorian title is the perfect way to thank them.”

Prior to the Victorian title, Bastian had only appeared three race meetings this season, which saw him finish first and second over the two Easter nights at Rosedale Speedway and Bairnsdale Speedway, and before that he made his season debuts at Bairnsdale Speedway earlier. in the year, which saw him suffer an untimely end of the night due to his crash in his opening qualifying race.

Looking ahead to his 2021-2022 season, Bastian, along with the rest of the Westpoint Racing team, is thrilled to have a full schedule, especially now that he’s wearing Victoria # 1.

Bastian is proudly supported by the following 2020-21 season sponsors:

Bridgestone Tires – Bairnsdale
Curtin Engineering
Turbo Marine
