The Nifty rose 8.7% last month – its best monthly performance since November 2020. The rally cemented July’s tag as the best calendar month for the markets.
Example: the month has generated an average gain of 3% over the past 10 years. Interestingly, returns have only been negative in July once in nine years.
However, July’s exuberance follows a much quieter August. Over the past decade, Nifty’s average August returns were 0.6%. In 2021, however, there has been a reversal of roles, with the Nifty rallying 0.3% in July and 8.7% in August.
