6-Laden Tesla Model X Plaid Beats Porsche 992 Turbo S In Drag Race Battle (Video)
The car enthusiast community is always coming up with creative ideas to amuse and entertain others, and if a Tesla vehicle is involved, the adrenaline rush is on another level. The DragTimes crew and their friends did something new, loaded up a Tesla Model X Plaid with 6 people and challenged an ICE sports car icon like the Porsche 992 Turbo S.
Although this is a new and exciting idea, the chances of the Tesla Model X Plaid losing these races seem somewhat obvious. But beating the odds is Tesla’s real game both on the race track and in the auto industry.
Tesla Model X Plaid itself is a large, super-heavy luxury SUV that weighs 5,412 pounds (2,455 kg). Loading six adults into the vehicle means an extra 1,000 pounds (~454 kg) is added, making it a nearly 3.0 ton SUV ready to conquer the drag strip.
Spec Comparison Between Model X Plaid and Porsche 992 Turbo S
Let’s see how these two vehicles from different segments compare on the spec sheets.
|Tiles Tesla Model X 2022||2021 Porsche 992 Turbo S|
|Transmission||Three-motor all-wheel drive||All-wheel drive|
|Motors / Engines||AC permanent magnet synchronous motor,
carbon fiber wrapped rotor, liquid cooled, with variable frequency drive
(1x front motor, 2x rear motors)
|3.7L Flat Six Twin Turbo|
|Transmission||Single-speed fixed gear||8-speed DCT|
|Acceleration (0-60mph)||2.5 seconds||2.1 seconds|
|Top speed||163 mph (262 km/h)||205 mph (330 km/h)|
|peak power||1,020 hp||640 hp|
|drag coefficient||0.24CDs||0.33 CDs|
|Unloaded weight)||5,412 pounds (2,455 kg)||3,560 lbs (1,615 kg)|
One thing that I found particularly interesting about these specs is the drag coefficient of both vehicles. Although it is a large family SUV, the Tesla Model X has quite a better drag coefficient (0.24 Cd) compared to the Porsche 992 (0.33 Cd).
Drag Race Results
In the first lap, although the Porsche 992 had a better launch and took a bit of a lead over the Tesla Model X Plaid, the Plaid still managed to beat the Porsche. The Model X Plaid completed the quarter mile in just 10.326 seconds at 139.30 mph while the Porsche 992 did it in 10.427 seconds at 131.59 mph.
Lap 2 wasn’t much different, Porsche had a better launch and kept the lead halfway through, he lost the 1/4 mile to the Model X Plaid by a narrow margin. The Model X Plaid did it in 10.367 seconds at 138.67 mph and the Porsche 992 Turbo S did it in 10.481 seconds at 132.19 mph.
One thing about the Porsche 992 Turbo S is that it has a crazy launch for a production sports car, a hyper-modded Nissan GTR was previously capable of beating a Model S Plaid.
Let’s watch the interesting video that the official Tesla Twitter account also retweeted last night with the caption “Fastest acceleration of any SUV”.
