1967 Big Block Camaro Drag Races A record GT-R R35
Another spectacular American vs Japanese clash presented by Hoonigan.
Even with modifications implemented, people can’t help but compare and contrast Japanese and American cars, even to the point of competing against them to determine which car is truly better. Here is an excellent match, a 2009 Nissan GT-R R35 against a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro.
Various battles on different fronts
Organized by Hoonigan, this drag race between a GT-R R35 and the Camaro represents battles on different fronts: import versus domestic; AWD vs RWD; turbo six vs big block v8; and Powerglide vs dual clutch. Of course, there’s the epic power-against-weight battlefront.
The fastest R35 GT-R Stock Turbo in quarter mile
On one side of the strip at Santa Margarita Ranch in California is a prettier-than-pink 2009 Nissan GT-R dubbed the Alpha Princess. Owned by Brooke Berini, this 1,200 horsepower Godzilla holds the stock R35 GT-R turbo quarter mile world record, posting a time of 8.72 seconds at 157 mph.
It’s not only super fast, but also super fast. Featuring OEM Nissan Stock Cover turbos with Garret G series internals, the Alpha Princess was the first stock turbo to enter 8-second territory. He has been featured on various YouTube channels for his achievement.
Lighter 800 horsepower Camaro Big Block
Hoping to challenge the Alpha Princess, a 1967 Camaro Big Block Drag owned by Darren Parsons, who is also a racer like Brooke. While the Drag Camaro went as fast as 8.60 seconds in the quarter mile, Parsons admitted it was on a different setup.
He had a more powerful engine, but all he had to do was settle for a big 540 cc block mill, still powerful at 800 hp. Still, the Camaro RWD is lighter than the GT-R all-wheel drive (3,000 pounds vs. 3,800 pounds) with a better 2-speed Powerglide drivetrain.
Head-up race of the best of three
The race is on, with Brooke and Darren agreeing to organize a best of 3 to 1000 foot head-to-head race. It was a shorter distance than a quarter mile, meaning the car with better acceleration from scratch would most likely win the contest. .
Less powerful but lighter, Brooke and Alpha Princess got off to a late start, leaving the lighter Camaro to win the first round. Brooke adjusted in the second set and easily won the round. The third round saw the Alpha Princess jump too early for victory (Darren was complaining though).
In the end, everyone had fun with Darren craving a rematch, maybe a Camaro with a better setup.
